It originates from the "orchard or walled" (1617), Garden of Villa Maffei (by Pellesina, a student of Palladio) and in 1859 was the headquarters of Napoleon III.
In 2013 it won the prestigious award for “Most Beautiful Garden of Italy” and in 2015 it won award for “the second most beautiful Parc in Europe“.
